PLT is excited to present an opportunity for up and coming performers to experience what it is like to tread the boards. Specifically, for cast members aged 5 - 16 years old, this show will have singing, dancing and maybe a little pixie dust.
A musical based on the play by Sir J.M. Barrie ~ Lyrics by Carolyn Leigh Music by Morris "Moose" Charlap ~ Additional lyrics by Betty Comben and Adolph Green ~ Additional music by Julie Styne.
Originally Directed, Choreographed and Adapted by Jerome Robbins ~ Licensed exclusively by Music Theatre International [Australasia]. All performance materials supplied by Hal Leonard Australia.
PLT are deeply disappointed to advise that due to the impending sale of our performance venue of the last three years (Dogs NZ Purina Pro Plan Exhibition Centre), we have had to make the difficult decision to cancel the 2021 season of Toxic Avenger.
The show was to be Directed by Sandy Brewer with Musical Directors Sue Windsor and Steve “Shack” Morrison
The sale is expected to be completed prior to our scheduled booking in the venue in October. Although the details of the sale and transition period from Dogs NZ are as yet unknown, due to the lack of certainty that the booking can be honoured we have decided to make this call in advance of the audition weekend. This is to recognise the emotional effort of auditioning and to minimise the disappointment to our future cast. Sometimes, making the right decision is really hard.
We understand the impact this has on the Production team, who have blocked out their calendars and begun preparation for this show. We gratefully acknowledge Toxic’s Director Sandy Brewer, who has ridden with us through the highs and lows of the last couple of weeks. More than anyone Sandy ‘gets it’, having faced two venue closures in her past tenure as President of PLT.
A number of avenues for alternative space have been urgently explored in conjunction with Porirua City Council with the support of our Patron, Mayor Anita Baker. Regretfully, nothing has yet been identified. A special shout out goes to Robyn Steel for doing her best in the time available.
We have however been able to find accommodation for the season of Peter Pan Jnr. Ngā mihi nui Mana College for coming to the rescue, we are really looking forward to our time with you. Performance dates for this production have been shifted to the October school holidays, 8-16 October.
For PLT this has also been particularly tough after Brassed Off being postponed firstly for COVID, and then again in 2021 due to venue unavailability.
Our proposed programme for 2022 is on hold and will be replanned around any spaces that can be identified in the Porirua area.
This situation redoubles our hunt for a community accessible, block bookable performing arts venue in Porirua. Such a space is essential to having locally produced Performing Arts.
If you can help – your space, your contacts, your business, skills, passion or recent lotto win (?!) – please contact us and we will connect you up with our space sub-committee. We are open to all sorts of ways of solving for this need - adaptive reuse, space partnership, or even new development options.
We are also seeking storage space (enclosed or alternatively land for containers) for our equipment currently located at Dogs NZ.
We have been here before (2012 and 2017) and have found a way forward, with the efforts of many. We will again. We believe the experience builds on our 71 years of history and has led us to become a more adaptable and connected theatre company. This whakataukī captures beautifully how we feel:
Nā tō rourou, nā taku rourou, ka ora ai te iwi.
With your basket and my basket the people will thrive.
